Strategic plan and curriculum
Delano Public Schools recently implemented a 5-Year Strategic Plan. In this plan, our vision is to provide our students systemic academic growth that promotes educational excellence and continuous improvement for every learner in a digital society. Along with this vision, our four major aims include: Technology, Curriculum, Professional Development and Facilities. This plan is an ongoing process that will ensure that our school district continues to improve upon its tradition of educational excellence.

Beginning with elementary school, students learn to be lifelong learners by building a strong foundation necessary to prepare them for the next step in their education. At the middle and high school levels, students are involved in many innovative programs. The first of these is STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education. A few years ago, Gateway to Technology (GTT) was implemented in the middle school, along with Project Lead the Way (PLTW) in the high school. As we move forward, curriculum will continue to be examined and enhanced to meet the demands of a digital learning environment.

College in the Schools (CIS) and Advanced Placement (AP) courses offer students the benefit of college courses without the full cost of tuition, allowing them to broaden their course selection before they enter a post-secondary institution. Along with these programs, our staff continues to engage students through the latest technological advances. These, coupled with engaging extracurricular activities, help us strive to better the educational opportunities for our students.

Test scores
ACT: Delano students who graduated in 2017 posted an average composite score of 23.5 in the ACT, widening the district’s traditional lead on the state average, which was 21.5. That performance makes Delano one of the top academic schools in the nation, as Minnesota ranked No. 1 for test scores among the 17 states that give the ACT to all students. Students nationwide posted an average composite score of 21.

MCA: Delano students substantially exceeded the state averages in math, science and reading scores in the 2017 MCA III exams. In math, 82.2 percent of Delano students met or exceeded standards, while the statewide rate was 59 percent. In science, 68.2 percent of Delano’s students were proficient compared to 54 percent statewide. And in reading, 78.7 percent of Delano students met or exceeded the standards compared to 60 percent statewide.
