Howard Lake, MN — The Meeker and Wright Special Education Cooperative (MAWSECO) proudly marked a major milestone with a 50th Anniversary Celebration held on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the MAWSECO Education Center in Howard Lake.

The event brought together a diverse and meaningful mix of people who have shaped the cooperative’s journey over the past five decades, including current staff, retirees, former employees, board members (past and present), superintendents, and former special education directors. Guests gathered in a spirit of reflection and gratitude for the cooperative’s evolution and enduring mission: supporting students, families, and member districts through high-quality special education services.

The day featured a variety of social activities, including live music, games, crafts, a cake walk, a puzzle tournament, and a community lunch. Guests enjoyed cake and coffee while connecting with old friends and new colleagues. A highlight of the celebration was the open-mic storytelling time, where special guests shared memories, milestones, and personal reflections on the impact of MAWSECO throughout the years.

As a symbol of the cooperative’s enduring legacy, attendees contributed to a “Legacy Tree” by writing messages of remembrance and hope on individual leaves. These leaves will be preserved and displayed in the Education Center, serving as a lasting tribute to MAWSECO’s people and purpose.

“The heart of MAWSECO has always been its people,” said Executive Director Melissa Hanson. “This day honored their contributions, celebrated where we’ve come from, and affirmed our shared commitment to meeting the needs of students with courage, care, and collaboration for years to come.”

The 50th Anniversary Celebration served not only as a moment to look back but also to look forward—with optimism for the next chapter in MAWSECO’s mission to support learners across its member districts.
