Reading

Want to become a better reader?  Start reading more!  Just like practicing a sport or a skill, reading also takes practice. The benefit of reading for just 20 minutes a day -...

My goal this year is to challenge you to become a voracious reader and writer. Similar to being involved in activities, practice makes one better. In order to become a better reader, you need to read.  A better writer, you need to write. We will be enjoying a variety of genres this year, while improving our comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills.

I encourage you to be a reading model for your child.  Set a time at home for both of you to read.

Curriculum
Our curriculum is driven by the 5th grade ELA Common Core standards.  We will also be reading several novels as a class and independently. Storyworks and CommonLit are two of the main resources we will be using.  Online practice will include Learning Farm and IXL.

Assessments/Reteaching

Assessments will be based on skills tests, written summaries, or presentations. If your child would benefit from a reteaching/retesting small group, I will notify you via a letter.  Completed reteaching work is required prior to a retest. The retest score will be the grade earned.

30 Book Challenge
Throughout the course of the school year, your challenge is to read at least 30 books. It may seem unachievable, but don’t worry.  Together, we can do it! The 30 book challenge will open your eyes to a wide variety of literary genres and will create within you an appreciation, if not a love, for reading. The most important factor is to choose books that interest you.   We will be covering specific expectations in class. Upon completing a book, you will write a summary in your challenge notebook. The 30 Book challenge will be starting in September and conclude in the middle of May. At the end of each month, Ms. Benker will conference with you to check your progress.  Monthly progress is expected.

Reading at Home
Even though your child will not have a daily reading sheet to record reading minutes, I expect that there will be time set aside at home for your child to read.

Grading Policy
It is crucial homework is completed for the next day.  This helps you actively participate in class, and I will be able to check your understanding of the skill. Assessments will account for 100% of your reading grade. Check your Family Access account to stay informed of your progress.
