Healthy Snacks

Healthy snacks are an important source of vitamins and nutrients in your childs diet.  Encourage foods that are whole grain, fruits, vegetables and dairy products.  Avoid foods that are high in sugar and fat as they add empty calories and can contribute to obesity.  Some examples of healthy snacks are:

  • carrot sticks and low fat dip
  • whole wheat crackers and low fat cheese
  • apples and low fat peanut butter
  • fresh fruit
  • celery with low or no fat cream cheese or low fat peanut butter
  • fruit cups
  • pudding cups
  • nuts (if nut allergies are not a concern)
  • boiled egg
  • whole grain bread

Food safety is an important consideration.  Make sure snacks that require to be kept cold are stored in a refrigerator or an insulated lunch bag.
