Three singers to state honor choir

After distinguishing themselves in recorded auditions, three Delano High School singers performed with statewide American Choral Directors Association honor choirs on Saturday, Nov. 17.

Seventh-graders Kiersten Koets and Sean Wissbroecker, along with eighth-grader Bella Molitor, represented Delano at the event, which included a daylong rehearsal session at Mahtomedi High School followed by a performance at the adjacent St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church.

“They are the ones that constantly do their job in the classroom, without hesitation. They constantly give their best effort, so they were the best representation for the choir program at Delano,” said choir director Eric Conway.

About 150 students from every corner of the state were included in the SSA (soprano, alto) choir and the TTB (tenor, bass), choirs for seventh and eighth grade. A total of nine students from Delano auditioned to participate.

“For these guys it’s like making it to state in choir singing, so it’s a really big deal,” said Conway.

The three enjoyed their experience alongside high-caliber peers who took singing as seriously as they do.

“The best part was making new friends,” said Molitor. “Since it was such a hard choir to get in to, it was cool being with a bunch of other people who really care about choir.”

“It just sounded so cool when you’re singing with people like that,” added Koets.

Wissbroecker enjoyed working under guest conductor Daniel Gutierrez.

“I liked singing the songs we had, and the conductor was really funny,” he said.

Students arrived at 8 a.m. and rehearsed until a 5:30 p.m. performance, which made for a long but enjoyable day that Koets said helped them improve their vocal skills. Molitor said it was a fun reward for an activity she enjoys even during regular school days.

“I feel like no matter how crazy your life is, you can just sing and forget about everything else,” she said.
