Students celebrate Unity Day

Delano Public Schools celebrated Unity Day on Wednesday, Oct. 23.

At the elementary school, all students and staff gathered in the media center to start the day with a large group photo, then enjoyed a variety of fun activities to promote kindness and prevent bullying. Classes discussed how to handle bullying, how to speak kindly and help others, how to be a good friend, how to use the buddy bench on the playground, and more. In the Imaginarium they watched a short video, signed a pledge, received stickers and bracelets, and received Tiger paw or "pinky promise" nail colors.

Intermediate school students congregated in the bus parking lot to spell out a massive "unity" sign for a photo taken from the roof, and also took part in a variety of classroom activities and discussions to promote unity. Earlier in the week classes also discussed what it means to be an "upstander" rather than a bystander, and prepared classroom puzzle pieces to hang in the commons as a visual reminder that all are an important piece of DIS.

In the high school, students covered the doors of their classrooms with handprint "I will" statements. These resolutions were geared toward promoting kindness, preventing bullying and making the school a safer place in general. Decoration setup was done by the COMPASS class. The theme was "We will create a world without bullying." Students also watched and discussed a song video called "help Me," which represents the feelings of a person being bullied. Discussion focused on the emotional impact of bullying, how to help in situations where bullying occurs, and how students can support one another in a positive way.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. For more information, see https://www.stopbullying.gov or https://www.pacer.org
