No MCA testing this year

Posted on: Apr 3, 2020

Students will not take the MCA or MTAS tests this school year as a result of the COVID-19 situation and the transition to distance learning.

Earlier this week the U.S. Department of Education approved a waiver to Minnesota for the federally-mandated standardized statewide assessments. The waiver also covered accountability and reporting requirements.

"Students need to be focused on staying healthy and continuing to learn," said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. "Teachers need to be able to focus on remote learning and other adaptations. Neither students nor teachers need to be focused on high-stakes tests during this difficult time. Students are simply too unlikely to be able to perform their best in this environment."

The MCAs and the alternative assessment Minnesota Test of Academic Skills, or MTAS, are used each year to measure academic progress. Reading tests are administered for grades 3-8 and 10, math tests are given in grades 3-8 and 11, and science tests are given in grades, 5, 8 and once in high school.
