DHS trap team second at nationals

When the dust settled, a small group of straight-shooting Delano High School students secured second place out of 173 teams at a national trapshooting competition in Michigan last week.

The USA High School Clay Target League held its inaugural National Championship July 12-15 in Mason, an event that included 1,400 individuals from 30 states. Participants were the highest qualifiers in all affiliated state high school clay target leagues in the United States.

Delano finished just nine points behind Wright County neighbor and tournament champion St. Michael-Albertville in the final team rankings, 968 to 959. Other Minnesota schools in the top 10 included New Prague (third place, 956), St. Peter (fifth place, 951), Wayzata (ninth place, 943) and NRHEG (10th place, 942).

Shooters for the Delano team and their two-round scores included Carson van Sytzama (100/98), Kayla Lysne (96/93) Erin Schultz (94/99), Reed Graunke (97/97) and Carter Mittelsteadt (93/94). Alternate team members were Reed Schmidt and Ben Hanson.

In individual competition, Jacob Cassell was Delano’s top performer (96/97, 106th). He was followed by Graunke (95/98, 117th), Schmidt (96/95, 186th), Lysne (96/91, 241st), van Sytzama (94, 411th), Hanson (92, 593rd), Mittelsteadt (92, 704th), Caleb Cassell (90, 730th) and Solstad (89, 771st).

A homecoming party for the team will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Tiger Activity Center at Delano High School on Tuesday, July 17. All are welcome.
