Dailey leads jazz section

Sophomore Owen Dailey was chosen to attend a 9-10 American School Band Directors Association Honor Jazz Band in Buffalo on Saturday, Nov. 11.

The group consisted of top jazz students from around the metro area, and professional jazz educators directed the ensemble and offered instrument-specific coaching. A full day event culminated in a late-afternoon concert.

“I played lead alto (saxophone), and it was just a lot of fun to play with people who are as into music as I am,” said Dailey. “There were a lot of instructors there who have been doing this their entire lives, so it was nice to pick up some knowledge from them, as well as the other kids. You can pick some things up from (the other students) and show them some things too.”

At DHS Dailey plays alto sax in the wind ensemble, and in Jazz I and Jazz II.

“I’m a big music guy because it’s something that a lot of people have in common. When you go to these honor bands kids come from all different backgrounds, yet the one thing we all have in common is music, so it’s a great connection point,” said Dailey.
