Band camp provides head start

Fledgling musicians are preparing for flight this week with the Delano Intermediate School Band Camp.

Fifth-grade students are meeting Monday through Thursday, Aug. 20-23, to learn the basics of their chosen instruments so they are ready to go when school begins. The camp is one of the first student activities to take place in the new intermediate school.

For those in attendance, the free camp is the culmination of a process that began last May when the students, then fourth-graders, viewed instrument demonstrations and decided which instruments they might like to play.

A testing day followed during which they had the opportunity to try instruments that they were interested in. Professionals from Eckroth Music were on hand to help students see their strengths and provide advice about which instrument to choose.

Percussion evaluations and a sign-up night followed in May, and the band camp this week is giving participants a head start before classes begin on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
