DMS recognizes that these years in a student’s academic career involve critical physical, emotional, academic and social development. Staff is committed to fostering a climate that allows students to build skills in critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. All efforts focus on maximizing academic growth for all students, regardless of ability. These efforts are supported by initiatives such as Project Wisdom, Gateway to Technology, DARE & Developmental Design, in addition to student led conferencing, interdisciplinary teaching and teams, and significant access to technology. Instruction is aligned with the Minnesota Academic Standards and allied offerings include FACS, Industrial Technology, Art, and instrumental and vocal Music. Placement in Language Arts and Math is done according to ability to solidify content foundation and offer appropriate levels of challenge.
7th and 8th graders have Encore scheduled into each day to allow an opportunity to access teaching staff for academic enrichment, reinforcement, homework help, re-teaching, course projects, as well as access additional time for research on a computer or in the media center.
