Blue Ribbon School Award

DELANO MIDDLE SCHOOL RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL AWARD

U. S. Secretary of Education, Rod Paige, named 115 public elementary and secondary schools as the first ones to be honored under the new No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools program. Delano Middle School is one of four schools in Minnesota named and the only middle school in the state to receive this award. The new program recognizes schools that make significant progress in closing the achievement gap or whose students achieve at very high levels. Delano Middle School qualified in the latter area by scoring in the top 10 percent of the state on the reading and math tests.

In order to qualify for the award, Delano Middle School had to first be nominated by the Minnesota Department of Education. Their name was submitted to the U.S. Department of Education by Minnesota Commissioner of Education, Dr. Cheri Pierson Yecke. The process included an 18 page application form that looked at all aspects of the school program including test scores, student demographics, staff, attendance, mission and vision statements, special programs, curriculum, and indicators of academic success.

"I am delighted to congratulate the principals, teachers, parents, and students of the 2003 No Child Left Behind; Blue Ribbon Schools" Paige said. These schools are national models of excellence that others can learn from and are meeting President Bush's mission to ensure that every child learns, and no child is left behind".

David Lindeman, school counselor, and Pat Hanson, media center director, represented the school at a two-day award/recognition ceremony held in Washington D.C., October 30-31.
