Students will be graded on having a working instrument and music in class, playing music when directed, and having a pencil to take notes. If your instrument is being repaired please have a note from a parent/guardian saying where the instrument is and when the expected return date is. Students will also be graded on following classroom rules, posture, and attitude.
Students are required to attend all band rehearsals throughout the school year. Concert Band students will be marked tardy after 8:02 and absent after 8:10. Wind Ensemble students will be marked tardy after 10:32 and absent after 10:38.
Attendance at pep band events is mandatory. Students who are involved in school activities that conflict with pep band are excused. If there is a one time only, unavoidable conflict please have a parent contact me for an excusal. Playoff games or events not on the main calendar are considered extra credit. Students are required to wear a band shirt to the performances.
All concerts are mandatory. Please arrive in concert dress. Men: black pants, black shoes, black socks, white dress shirt, tie. Women: Black slacks or skirt, white blouse.
Written and performance tests will be given over the course of the year to determine musical knowledge of rhythm, pitch, articulation, dynamics, tempo, and other musical elements.
Full auditions for chair placement will include playing major scales, the chromatic scale, sight reading, and a prepared excerpt will be held on the final week of the school year.
All Band Students will perform a solo or an ensemble for the in house solo and ensemble performance. Grades will be awarded on a scale of 0 – 40 using a Minnesota State High School League solo and ensemble scoring sheet. Soloists or ensembles receiving a “Superior” rating will be encouraged to move on to the State Solo and Ensemble Contest.
Admission to Jazz Band is through the director. Jazz B and rehearsal will meet once a week at 7:30am. Instruments needed are Alto, tenor, Bari Saxes; Trumpets; Trombones; Percussion; Bass Guitar; Guitar; and Piano.
Large Group Contest
The Concert Band and Wind Ensemble compete against other section bands at a contest held in early March. This is considered a concert performance and attendance is mandatory.
Marching Band is a volunteer activity available to students in grades 8 – 11. We will perform for Memorial Day parade, The Delano 4th of July Parade, and possible other local parades in June.
