Dollars for Scholars
Dollars for Scholars (DFS), founded in 1958, provides an effective, proven way for the community to provide academic support and financial aid to local students. Dollars for Scholars is a division of Scholarship America, which has more than 1200 locally based, volunteer-driven chapters serving students in nearly 4000 communities across the country. In Delano, Dollars for Scholars raises scholarship money to award to graduating seniors to pursue their post secondary education. Over the past three years, Dollars for Scholars has given $1000.00 scholarships to 28 individuals each year. The number of scholarships and dollar amounts to be awarded each year depends on the money raised that year. Who is eligible? Any student who will attend a post secondary school including vocational/technical, community college, or four year college. What is the criteria for receiving a scholarship? The student must participate in at least two Dollar for Scholars activities; one mandatory activity is the rose sale in October. Volunteer activities, extra-curricular activities and academics are all reviewed when a student is considered for scholarship dollars.
Applications for DFS scholarships will be in the high school office by late February. For additional information on Dollars for Scholars you can visit www.scholarshipamerica.org or call Janette Nolan at 763.972.6180 or Karen Anderson at 763.972.3657.
