Course Description: Students in Anatomy and Physiology focus on the organs of the seven major systems of the human with respect to how they are structured and then to examine how those structures are related to their functions.

Students will be able to:

The Basics

1. Differentiate between various types of tissues.

2. Use the various planes and regions of the human body to locate specific organs.

3. Use terms of positions to show motions.

Systems Involved in Metabolism

4. Identify and describe the functioning of the organs of the Digestive System.

5. Outline the requirements of a sound nutritional diet.

6. Identify the organs of the Respiratory System and illustrate how oxygen is transported into the bloodstream.

6A. Illustrate the control mechanisms of breathing.

Systems that Move the Body

7. Know all the bones of the human body and their surface features.

8. Describe how bones develop.

9. Illustrate the histology of bone tissue.

10. Know the major muscles of the human body.

11. Illustrate the “sliding filament” model of muscle action.

12. Describe how the neuromuscular junction is constructed and its actions.

13. Explain in detail a specific movement with respect to the type of joints involved as well as the muscles involved and their specific roles and actions.

Systems that Transport

14. Know the components of blood.

15. Know the major arteries and veins in the human body.

16. Compare and contrast the structures of arteries and veins.

17. Diagram the human heart and the blood flow through it.

17A. Illustrate the control mechanisms of blood flow.

Systems that Control by Communication

18. Know the endocrine organs and identify the hormones and their actions of each.

19. Illustrate how a nerve cell transmits nerve impulses.

20. Know the major nerves of the human body.

21. Illustrate the various parts of the human brain and the specific location of functions of each.

22. Show where the major functions are controlled on the cerebral cortex.

23. Illustrate the actions of the five sense organs: hearing, vision, smell, taste, and touch.
