Philosophy and Goals:
We believe it is essential that the Delano "School Within A School" program provides a safe and nurturing environment which will support individual and diverse student learning, personal growth, and social achievements. SWAS programming at Delano High School focuses on prevention and intervention to optimize student success in learning through online, offline, and project based learning.
The Goal of the program is to assist students who have been identified, while in high school, of being in jeopardy of not graduating with his or her class due to a variety of academic, social, family, or other issues. With the partnership of the school, community, and family involvement students will become lifelong learners possessing skills, knowledge, creativity, sense of worth, and citizenship necessary to function and flourish in our rapidly changing society.
Program Overview
The School Within A School program is for students in 11th or 12th grade and is designed to help recover credits lost in prior years and reduce the number of dropouts. A successful program is made up of a number of key components. These components include: identification process, academic support, family support, personal/social support, work release, business connections, and community resources.
The SWAS program is a voluntary program. Students considered for the program are likely to be significantly behind in credits but not always. Students may have habitual truancy issues, be a teen parent, have legal issues, or may just be unlikely to succeed in the regular classroom full time. These factors along with administrator, counselor, and teacher recommendation determine placement in the program.
