Meet Mrs. Workman

Hello! I'm Mrs. Kathy Workman. I've been teaching first grade at Delano since 1971. (Yes, I'm teaching children of former students, but at least I haven't been able to claim that I've taught anyone's grandparents yet!) I didn't get very far from home: I grew up on a dairy farm north of Waverly, went to a two-room school until seventh grade, and then attended and graduated from Howard Lake High School. I earned my degree in elementary education, with an art minor, from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus, in 1995 completed my Master's Degree from St. Mary's University, and continue to take graduate classes as time permits.

My husband Rick and I live just outside of Delano on about 15 acres of land where I raise chickens for their eggs, and do a little gardening. Rick has enough room to collect John Deere tractors along with other interesting pieces of farm equipment, and repair just about anything with a motor. Rick's "day job" is as a mechanic for the Delano-based company, Tree Top Service.

We have three sons: John, who lives in Minneapolis, has a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Minnesota, and is currently exploring employment in his field in Australia; Luther, a licensed journeyman electrician, and his wife Holly have a 4 year old son, Tatum, and a 3 year old daughter, Jaidyn. They live in Delano. Jacob, a graduate from the Carlson School of Management, lives in Australia with his wife Annabelle, and is currently employed at Swinburne University of Technology, as well as mentoring and tutoring at Queens College, University of Melbourne. All three boys were active in music and sports during the years they attended the Delano Public schools.

September, 2007

I, in my spare time, keep busy as a member of the Delano United Methodist church, where I am involved in the Sunday School and music ministries. I grew up as a 4-H member, and currently am an adult leader at the county and state levels in the project area of wildlife education. I love doing genealogy and historical research, and am continually working on putting together the family history of the Workmans and their extended and allied families, as well as gathering information on my own "cold case" file, the 1897 Boxell murders in Howard Lake. I collect vintage hats just for fun, as well as antiques related to the egg business, such as egg scales, egg beaters, and egg carriers. My husband and I enjoy canoeing and kayaking.

We've had two opportunities to travel to Australia. First, when our son Jacob was attending the University of Melbourne on a study-abroad semester, and three years later for his wedding! One of the highlights in 2008 was our climb to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. You can see the Sydney Opera House below on the right side of this picture.
