Walk to School on Oct. 4

Delano Elementary School is among nearly 200 schools around Minnesota that will observe International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

Parents are invited to drop their children off at the Delano Evangelical Free Church on Elm Ave. between 7:15 and 7:45 a.m., and students will then be able to walk along the sidewalk and Tiger Trail to reach the elementary school. School staff members will line the route to monitor students and ensure safety.

Walk to School Day is held to promote healthy habits that include walking and bicycling. Regular physical activity helps children build strong bones, muscles and joints, and it decreases the risk of obesity. In contrast, insufficient physical activity over a lifetime can contribute to chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and stroke. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that children and adolescents get one hour or more of physical activity each day.
