A handful of Delano Middle School students distinguished themselves through outstanding fitness during the recent school year.
While the official Presidential Fitness Award program is no longer recognized nationally, physical education instructor Sean Roff presented fifth- and sixth-grade students who met the qualifications for the award with certificates and T-shirts on Monday, May 21.
To qualify, students must score within the top 15 percent of their national peers by age and gender in four tests: pull-ups, sit-ups, the sit-and-reach stretch and the mile run.
“This program is about promoting improvements in physical fitness and is just one way to celebrate fitness,” Roff said.
Students who qualified included fifth-grade girls Adelyn Fiecke, Maria Manzanares, Aubrey Barnes, Danica Cox, Amelia Frailey, Abigail Higgins, Amelia Nelson, Kiersten Kimball, Anya Bekkala and Annabelle Wentzel.
Sixth-graders included Beau Merz along with Gina Pinoniemi, Hannah Ylitalo, Emma Huotori, Marin Johnson and Kallie Ravtiola.
